Abstract

Women-headed households in Ponorogo Regency face various challenges in managing household finances, including limited financial recordkeeping practices, inadequate budgeting skills, and a lack of understanding of Islamic financial principles, which may increase household economic vulnerability. Based on this issue, the present community service program sought to address the question of how an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)-based Islamic family financial mentoring program could improve financial literacy and financial management practices among women-headed households. The program involved 30 participants and was implemented through the stages of discovery, dream, design, destiny, and reflection. Data were collected through observations, interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), pre-tests, post-tests, and evaluations of participants’ financial behavior changes. The findings revealed that participants possessed considerable economic assets through micro-home businesses and strong social assets through community networks, yet lacked adequate financial management capabilities. Following the mentoring program, the average Islamic financial literacy score increased from 54.5 to 85.6, representing an improvement of 31.1 points. Furthermore, the percentage of participants with written household budgets increased from 20% to 86.7%, routine financial recordkeeping from 16.7% to 83.3%, family savings ownership from 36.7% to 76.7%, and regular infaq and charitable contributions from 40% to 90%. From the perspective of maqashid shariah, the program contributed to strengthening hifz al-mal (protection of wealth), hifz al-nafs (protection of life), and hifz al-din (protection of religion) through improved financial management, enhanced household economic resilience, and greater implementation of Islamic values in household financial activities. These findings indicate that ABCD-based Islamic family financial mentoring is effective in improving both financial literacy and financial behavior among women-headed households.
