OPTIMALISASI LAHAN TIDUR MELALUI URBAN FARMING BERBASIS PEMBERDAYAAN MASYARAKAT

Abstract

The limited availability of green open spaces and the large amount of idle land in urban areas present both challenges and opportunities for achieving food security and community empowerment. This community service program aimed to increase community awareness, knowledge, and skills in utilizing vacant land as productive land through the concept of urban farming. The activity was conducted from May 5–12, 2026, in RT 007/RW 023, Jombor Kavling Indah Housing Complex, Sinduadi Village, Mlati District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The methods used included field observation, outreach, demonstrations, planting practices, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The materials provided covered the utilization of limited land, household-scale agribusiness, social entrepreneurship, capacity building for the Karang Taruna organization, and food crop cultivation techniques using polybag media. The results showed an increased understanding among the community of the importance of utilizing idle land as part of participatory development, improved participant skills in cultivating betel, tomato, pandan, and chili plants, as well as growing community motivation to develop a more productive, clean, and economically valuable environment. This program not only provides ecological benefits through the optimization of open spaces but also strengthens social capital, increases community participation, and creates opportunities for developing family-based economies through urban agriculture. The sustainability of the program requires continuous assistance so that urban farming activities can develop into a community movement that supports food security and sustainable development.
