Abstract

Arabic letter literacy is the main foundation in reading the Qur'an, yet observations at SD Darul Funun showed that many students still struggle to recognize hijaiyah letters, distinguish similarly shaped letters (such as Ba, Ta, Tsa), and are confused when reading letters with basic harakat, leading them to read by guessing based on memorization. This community service aims to understand and describe the implementation of strengthening the basics of reading Arabic letters to improve the quality of students' Qur'an reading at SD Darul Funun. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, where the research subjects consisted of homeroom teachers, students, and diniyyah teachers. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation techniques. The mentoring results showed that the combined application of the Iqra method, which trains students gradually, and the Talaqqi method, which allows teachers to provide examples and correct pronunciation (makhraj) instantly, proved to be highly effective. Students experienced a significant improvement in naming letters independently, reading letters with basic harakat correctly, pronouncing previously incorrect letters precisely, and stringing Arabic letters together much more fluently. In addition, this interactive approach also successfully increased students' enthusiasm, focus, and confidence, so they no longer felt afraid or hesitant when reading in front of the class
