IMPLEMENTASI PROGRAM SMART DALAM PENGUATAN LITERASI MEMBACA SISWA SDN 1 Japura Lor

Abstract

Reading literacy is an essential basic skill for elementary school students. However, limited access to reading materials and the lack of optimal student engagement in reading activities remain issues that need to be addressed. This activity aimed to describe the implementation of the SMART Program in strengthening the reading literacy of students at SDN 1 Japura Lor and to describe student involvement during the activity. The SMART Program was conducted on August 5, 2026, involving approximately 60 fourth- to sixth-grade students for approximately two hours. The implementation method used a participatory approach through five stages: Sharing, Reading, Appreciation, Resume, and Question and Answer. The activity was supported by a mobile library service that provided access to reading materials, as the school did not have a library facility. Data were obtained through observations of student participation, the ability to prepare summaries, confidence in retelling the contents of the books, and students' participation in answering questions. The results showed that students participated enthusiastically and were actively involved in the literacy activities. Students were able to prepare summaries of the books they read and demonstrated confidence in presenting and retelling the contents of the books. Students were also actively engaged in the question-and-answer session related to the reading materials. These findings indicate that the SMART Program can serve as an alternative approach to strengthening reading literacy by integrating access to reading materials with activities that encourage students to read, understand, process, and communicate information actively. Future activities are recommended to be conducted continuously and complemented by pre- and post-activity evaluations to objectively measure students' literacy development.
