Abstract

This study examines the Dutch colonial government's strategy in preventing the spread of Islam in the archipelago. Dutch colonialism was not only about politics and economics, but also about intervention in the religious life of the people, particularly Islam. This was because, during the conquest of the archipelago, the Dutch faced the reality that every rebellion that occurred always originated from charismatic clerics or scholars who were able to mobilise the people by igniting the spirit of jihad fii sabilillah (holy war in the way of Allah). To weaken and contain this Islamic power, the colonial government enacted various regulations targeting Islam, particularly restricting the movements of religious leaders with the aim of hindering their missionary activities. Islam was viewed as a political force threatening the sustainability of colonial rule in the archipelago. Through a qualitative approach using historical methods, including documentary data collection and literature review, this study reveals the systematic political policies designed by Snouck Hurgronje, which were highly influential and detrimental to Islam in spreading its message. However, ultimately, these political repressive measures failed completely in suppressing the dynamic spread of Islamic da'wah in the Nusantara region.
