Problem formulation is a crucial initial stage in scientific research as it determines the focus, direction, and quality of the study. This article examines research methods in problem formulation in a general context, particularly in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing primary and secondary literature as well as previous research documents to understand the principles and practices of problem formulation. The analysis indicates that an effective problem statement should originate from real phenomena, be specific, measurable, and supported by existing literature and prior studies. The choice of research method, whether qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods, is closely related to the nature of the formulated problem. Recent literature further emphasizes the importance of clarity, variable identification, and research questions to ensure systematic, academically relevant, and practically applicable research. With this understanding, PAI researchers can develop well-directed research questions, provide scientific contributions, and produce practical recommendations for improving Islamic religious education.
