Abstract

Effective leadership is often simplified to the act of giving instructions. This article explores an alternative paradigm through the metaphor of "A Leader Like a Shady Tree" from an Islamic perspective, which emphasizes the provision of shelter (ri'ayah) and well-being. The formulation of the problem is to address why the concept of leadership as a provider of shelter is relevant and how it can be implemented. The research questions focus on: (1) What is the philosophical foundation of the shady tree metaphor in Islamic tradition? (2) What are the characteristics and behaviors of a "shady tree" leader? (3) What is its impact on organizations and society? Using a qualitative research method in the form of a literature study (library research) of primary sources (the Qur'an, Hadith) and secondary sources (Islamic leadership and management literature), this article finds that this concept is strongly based on the principles of rahmah (compassion), amanah (trustworthiness), and justice. Like a tree, a true leader must have strong roots of character (shiddiq), a steadfast trunk of integrity (amanah), productive branches of competence (fathanah), and foliage that provides benefits and shelter to all elements beneath it. The findings indicate that this model not only creates a safe and fertile environment for the growth and development of members but also enhances collective resilience, loyalty, and productivity in a sustainable manner, far surpassing the effectiveness of purely instructional leadership.
