An Analysis of the Qirā'āt Of Maliki and Māliki Yawm Al-Dīn: Implications For The Interpretation Of Qs. Al-Fātiḥah 4

The Science of qira’at is a discipline in the Quranic studies that examines the various ways of pronouncing Quranic verses and their differences, attributing these readings to authentic narrators. Variations in qira’at are not only phonetic and grammatical dimensions but also influence the understanding and interpretation of the meanings of the verse. This study aims to analyze the differences between the qira’at readings of Māliki and Maliki in QS. Al-Fātiḥah, verse 4, and to examine their impact on the interpretation of the verse. The study employs a library research method utilizing a descriptive-qualitative and analytical approach. The data analyzed were derived from a review of various literature sources concerning the science of qira’at, Arabic linguistics, and relevant exegesis works. The findings indicate that the Māliki reading emphasizes Allah SWT as the Master of the Day of Judgment, whereas the Maliki reading highlights Allah SWT as the King of the Day of Judgment. These variations cannot be considered contradictory, as both are mutawātir (mass-transmitted) readings that yield mutually complementary meanings. Thus, the difference in qira’at in QS. Al-Fātiḥah, verse 4, enriches the understanding of the perfection of Allah SWT’s sovereignty and ownership on the Day of Judgment.
